Wal-Mart Joins the Local Movement

Although Wal-Mart has not been traditionally associated with positive local change, a new partnership with the SC Department of Agriculture has encouraged a step in the right direction. Today, the SCDA rolled out the new Certified SC Local food partnership at the Wal-Mart in Lexington. Following North Carolina's lead to provide local food at one of the nation's most frequented supermarkets, the SCDA has made strides to increase the availability of locally produced food to the general public. It has not yet been seen as to whether this new initiative will provide a substantial boost to local farmers' income, but it will help spread the joy of eating local to many families that would otherwise not experience it. For more information visit the SC Department of Agriculture at: http://agriculture.sc.gov.

If you are a farmer taking part in this initiative, we'd love to hear from you! Take a minute to blog on the FarmBlog about your experiences with this new initiative.

Coming Soon...An All-New, All-Local Farmers Market!

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of two of our own SCFV farmers, Blythewood will soon be getting a brand-new all-local farmers market. The market for local food is finally beginning to take off in South Carolina. Now what we need to do is keep infiltrating the areas that are underserved. The new monthly market, set for the Blythewood Town Hall will bring business and a sense of community to the small farmers in the surrounding area. The market may also serve as a forum for food artisans and crafters, and will allow local residents to connect with their neighborhood growers.

The Blythewood Farmers Market kicks off June 21st outside of the Blythewood Town Hall (171 Langford Rd, Blythewood, SC), and will run every thrid Saturday from 8am to noon until December.

Come out and support your local farmers!
